Halo vs Xtrallux: Two Flexible VCSEL Laser Designs, Compared

Peck Hu

Quick verdict: Choose Xtrallux if you want an FDA-cleared, laser-only cap with 136 to 352 lasers, a six-minute daily session and a published warranty of up to five years on its top model. Choose Halo if you'd rather put a flexible laser liner inside a hat you already own, want red and blue light modes, and prefer a lower planned price ($499), knowing its FDA 510(k) clearance is still pending.

Light source: more in common than you'd think

If you assumed Xtrallux was an LED cap, it isn't. Xtrallux describes its caps as using "VCSEL SMT Laser Diodes" at 650nm and 5mW per diode, and its homepage is direct about it:

"No LEDs, no mixed wavelengths." — Xtrallux

That puts Xtrallux and Halo closer together than most laser caps. Both use VCSEL lasers, the flat, surface-emitting chips that make thin, low-profile arrays possible. Halo's FlexArray™ uses 128 × 660nm red VCSEL lasers. Every Xtrallux cap has more lasers, from 136 on the Alpha to 352 on the Extreme RX.

The difference is what else is on board. Halo adds 128 × 460nm blue light LEDs for a Scalp Balance mode and a combined Deep Care mode. Xtrallux sticks to red only. In fairness to Xtrallux's approach, a 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology by Lueangarun and colleagues found a significant difference between laser-only and combined laser-and-LED home devices in pooled trials, with laser-only devices showing the larger effect, though the authors noted only a few short-term trials were available.

Fit and form factor: both flexible, in different ways

Xtrallux markets a "Flexible Fitting, Flat Profile Design," and its spec sheet says its devices "are somewhat flexible to provide comfort and adaptability to different head shapes." The laser dome comes with a sports cap to wear over it, and Xtrallux lists interior circumferences by model (for example, 562mm on the Super Plus and 604mm on the Turbo Pro).

Halo's flexibility works differently. FlexArray is built as five separate flexible panels that bend to follow the curve of your head, and the liner snaps magnetically into the Reseen cap or fits most standard baseball caps you already own (darker caps recommended). The aim is consistent emitter distance across the hairline, temples and crown, which our FlexArray technology post and scalp coverage guide explain in detail. Xtrallux doesn't publish how its flexibility is built, so we can't compare the two designs beyond what each brand states. For the broader format trade-offs, see laser liner vs laser cap.

Routine and ease of use

Xtrallux wins on session length: six minutes a day, with a listed duty cycle of "6 Min. / 24 Hrs." Its FAQ says going beyond recommended use may have a negative impact. The cap plugs into a clip-on lithium-ion power pack so you aren't tied to an outlet, though Xtrallux doesn't publish battery runtime and notes packs need replacing over time.

Halo sessions run 10 minutes (Red · Daily Care or Blue · Scalp Balance) or 15 minutes (Red + Blue · Deep Care). It's wireless with USB-C charging, and smart wear detection starts the light only when the liner is in proper contact with the scalp.

Evidence and FDA status

Xtrallux has the regulatory edge. The FDA 510(k) database lists K222364, decided November 16, 2022, covering the Xtrallux Alpha, Super Plus, Turbo Pro and Extreme RX. The 510(k) summary describes 650nm red diode lasers at up to 5mW each, cites Capillus devices as predicates, and lists indications for androgenetic alopecia in men (Norwood-Hamilton IIa to V) and women (Ludwig I-1 to I-4, II-1, II-2 or frontal), skin types I to IV. Xtrallux says its devices are FDA-cleared to treat androgenetic alopecia.

On clinical evidence, Xtrallux's product pages summarize randomized trials of 655nm laser devices and published meta-analyses of low-level laser therapy. These support laser therapy as a category; we didn't find a published trial of an Xtrallux device itself. The 2021 Lueangarun review covered devices on the market as of January 2020, before Xtrallux's clearance, so it doesn't include them.

Halo: FDA 510(k) clearance is pending, expected early 2027, and Halo has no published clinical trials. It's a cosmetic device designed to support scalp health for a healthier-looking scalp and fuller-looking hair.

Price, warranty and the money-back guarantee

Xtrallux list prices range from $1,099 (Alpha) to $3,499 (Extreme RX), and the Super Plus and Turbo Pro were 50% off during our check. Xtrallux notes the Extreme RX is sold only through select providers. Halo is planned at $499, which is provisional until launch.

Xtrallux publishes clear warranty terms that scale with the model: 12 months on the Alpha, 24 on the Super Plus, 36 on the Turbo Pro and 60 on the Extreme RX, with 12 months on the power pack and adapter and registration required within 30 days.

Its six-month money-back guarantee has conditions worth reading. Per Xtrallux's product pages, you must use the device for six months and request the return before the end of the seventh month. It applies only to direct US purchases from xtrallux.com (not ShopPay Financing), and a 25% restocking fee applies, with shipping, fees and taxes non-refundable. For Halo's terms, see the Reseen warranty.

Which should you choose?

• Choose Reseen Halo if… you want a laser liner for a hat you already own, a five-panel fit that bends to your head, red plus blue light modes, wireless USB-C charging and a planned $499 price, and you're comfortable with a cosmetic device whose FDA clearance is pending.

• Choose Xtrallux if… FDA clearance is a must, you want more red lasers (136 to 352), a laser-only design, the shortest daily session (six minutes) and a published multi-year warranty, and your budget starts around $1,000.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xtrallux an LED or laser cap?

Laser. Xtrallux says its caps use 650nm VCSEL SMT laser diodes and no LEDs. Halo also uses VCSEL lasers but adds blue LEDs.

Is Xtrallux FDA-cleared?

Yes. The FDA 510(k) database lists K222364 (November 2022) for the Alpha, Super Plus, Turbo Pro and Extreme RX. Clearance is not the same as FDA approval.

How long do you wear an Xtrallux cap?

Six minutes once a day, according to Xtrallux. Halo sessions are 10 or 15 minutes depending on the mode.

What should I look for in Xtrallux reviews?

Check which model the reviewer used, since laser counts and warranties differ, whether they bought at sale or list price, and how long they used it. Xtrallux's guarantee requires six months of use before a return.

How does Xtrallux compare with Capillus?

Both are laser-only, 650nm, six-minute daily caps; Xtrallux's 510(k) lists Capillus devices as predicates. See our Halo vs Capillus comparison.
